There’s no mercy when it comes to basketball in Cleveland.

Former Cavaliers’ head coach David Blatt understands that. And now, so does Northeast Ohio Prep’s girls’ basketball team.

Gilmour Academy beat them in the semifinals of a playoff tournament by a final score of 108-1. Ranked No. 3 in the Cleveland.com Top 25, the 17-4 Gilmour Lancers have shown an affinity for brutally running up the score. They’ve won eight games this season by 30 or more points, including a 92-15 rout in early December.

Lancers’ head coach Bob Beutel, who has more than 600 career wins and was inducted into the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame last January, told Cleveland.com that he started inserting junior-varsity players into the game during the first quarter.

“Our intent was to not run anything up, and we took steps to not disrespect our opponent,” Beutel told the paper.

Whatever measures the head coach and his staff say they took, if any, were decidedly unsuccessful. By halftime the score was 72-1 and little changed after the break. But Beutel said the blame can’t be placed squarely on his shoulders.

“They went 0-for-28 from the field and 1-for-4 from the free-throw line. We let them shoot,” he said.
